09:08 am - Iowa Flooding
ghostworld
For those not in the midwest, we've had round after round of rain/thunderstorms/all around bad weather which has led to lots of flooding.  I believe the flood levels are already higher than the floods from 1993.  Don't worry, my house is fine.  I'm far enough away from the river.  At least I hope things will be fine.  There is no standing water in my yard, just on the road, but that quickly subsided and there are now just pot holes full of water.

Nate's sister, Crystal, is spending her summer in Iowa City for school and was living in Mayflower and has already had to move twice because of the rising water.

Here are some pictures of the flooding in Iowa City.

When I drove over the river this morning the water was getting pretty high and it was pretty much out of it's banks.  Hopefully downtown does not flood.  People said back in 1993 our old building on 3rd ave was flooded in the basement.  I'm guessing they've already closed Edgewood Road by the river.  It would not surprise me.

On my way home from work they had closed the Edgewood Road bridge.  I really wonder what the river is like up my Ellis Park.  I'm not going to be one of those "gawkers" that get in the way of everyone.  When I went to Pam's house to go pick up Sophie (that will be another post), they were already sandbagging around the sewers and businesses on E Ave down by the fire station.

Tomorrow work has been kind enough to give us half a day off to go volunteer to sandbag and help out as needed.  I will definitely take them up on that opportunity.  Back in 1993, I wasn't that close to this type of flooding.  I'm watching all this in awe at the power of mother nature.

When Pam and I were driving to Mt. Vernon this afternoon, the river was incredibly high.  I wish I would have had my camera to take pictures.

I still haven't decided where I'm going to volunteer tomorrow.  I really want to go down to Iowa City, but it makes more sense with the gas prices to just stay up here.  My friend Melissa and I will go somewhere tomorrow and help.  I'm really glad that I will be able to (hopefully) make a difference.

Sophie is my new foster dog.  She's about 6 years old.  She's a little pudgy, but that can easily be corrected with the correct diet and some exercise.  She LOVES playing fetch and will actually bring the ball back to you and drop it at your feet.  Izzy doesn't mind her (like with Fred) but Rose still does not like dogs.  Oh well.  Rose will have to get used to her.  Sophie is very adorable and a sweetheart.  So if you know anyone who is looking for a dog send them my way.  :)

I visited BeliefNet today because I was bored.  I took their "Belief-O-Matic" quiz-thingy and here are my results.  Which are very interesting.
